Yellow, blue, and green dockless bikes are everywhere in Chinese cities. This guide covers the shared process for unlocking them. Brand names appear only so you can recognize the frame—we do not rank or recommend a brand.
Mainland street bikes only (not Hong Kong or Macao schemes).
Brands you will see (recognition only)
| English | Chinese | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Meituan Bike | 美团单车 | Often yellow |
| Hello Bike / Hellobike | 哈啰(also written 哈罗) | Often blue |
| Qingju | 青桔 | Often teal / green |
Never confuse Qingju (青桔) with unrelated look-alike spellings. Never use typo forms for Hello Bike.
Prerequisite: a working wallet
You usually need Alipay or WeChat Pay already set up with a foreign card (or another accepted funding source inside those wallets) before a bike will unlock. The scan often opens a mini program inside the wallet or the operator’s app that charges that wallet.
Set up payments first:
- Alipay
- WeChat Pay
- Overview: How to pay
Foreign-card mobile payments are summarized here: China Daily.
Unlock flow (typical)
- Find a bike that is not visibly damaged and shows as available in the map (if you use the operator app).
- Open Alipay or WeChat scan (or the operator app’s scan).
- Scan the QR on the bike body or basket.
- Agree to the ride agreement; grant location permission when asked.
- Complete any deposit / credit assessment prompts as shown in the app (rules differ by operator and city—confirm on screen; details here are unverified beyond “check the app”).
- Wait for the lock to open; adjust seat; start riding.
- Park inside an allowed electronic fence / P-spot shown on the map.
- Tap End ride and wait for the locked confirmation and fare summary.
Deposits, billing, and extra fees
- Deposit or deposit-free credit: depends on operator rules and your wallet credit score products—read the disclosure before paying a deposit
- Time-based fare: usually starts after unlock; check per-minute / per-15-minute pricing in the app
- Dispatch / scheduling fees: may apply if you leave a bike outside the service area or in a restricted zone
- Damage reports: photograph the bike before riding if something is already broken; report in-app
Exact yuan amounts are not listed here—they vary by city and change often.
Parking rules (why trips will not end)
Cities draw digital parking zones. If End ride stays gray or warns you to move:
- Walk the bike into the blue/green parking polygon on the map
- Do not block subway exits, bike lanes, or shop doors
- Watch for temporary event bans
Failure to park correctly is one of the top foreigner complaints—see common errors.
Problems visitors hit
- Wallet not bound / foreign card declined mid-unlock
- Real-name not finished inside the mini program
- Location permission off → cannot find fence
- Scanning a broken bike still listed as free
- Ending the ride in a courtyard without GPS
FAQ
Which brand should I choose?
Whichever safe bike is closest and unlocks with the wallet you already use. No ranking on China Arrive.
Can I pay the bike company with a foreign card directly?
Usually the charge goes through Alipay or WeChat Pay, which may then bill your foreign card.
Are e-bikes the same process?
Some operators mix pedal and assisted bikes; age/license rules can differ—read the in-app warning for that vehicle type.
