WeChat Pay: fix “international card not supported”

You tried to add a foreign card in WeChat Pay and the app refuses it, or checkout says the card type is not supported. Work through the checks below, then retry once—repeated fails can look like fraud to your bank.
Official card guide: WeChat Help.
Likely causes
- Card network not offered in your build — Official and government pages list networks such as Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners, Discover (lists vary by page). Your card may simply fall outside what the add-card form accepts right now (Chaoyang listing, China Daily).
- Issuer decline — China Daily notes some foreign issuers reject the bind because they do not recognize the authorization. Call the number on the back of your card.
- Prepaid / virtual / fintech cards — Often fail even when the logo matches. Try a standard credit or debit card.
- Name mismatch — Real-name passport name must match the card embossing closely. Fix real-name first (guide).
- Wrong product feature — International cards are for everyday mainland purchases, not red packets or transfers (Help).
What to try
- Confirm real-name status is approved.
- Update WeChat; retry Wallet → Bank Cards → Add.
- Try a second eligible card from another network.
- Ask your bank to allow overseas e-commerce / wallet merchants; retry after 30–60 minutes.
- If WeChat still refuses, set up Alipay with the same card—acceptance can differ by wallet.
- Keep cash for the same day.
How to capture evidence (helps support)
If you contact wallet support or your bank:
- Screenshot the exact error text (English or Chinese).
- Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
- Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
- Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.
Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.
When to stop retrying
If two careful attempts fail after you fixed SMS, real-name, and bank alerts, switch to another wallet or cash for that purchase. Continued declines can deepen issuer fraud locks.
FAQ
Does “not supported” mean WeChat Pay is banned for tourists?
No. It usually means that card or that action is blocked. Another card or Alipay may work.
Should I keep tapping Add Card?
No. Fix the bank side, wait, then try again once or twice.
