A mainland China physical SIM (or carrier eSIM sold locally) can give you a +86 number for calls and SMS plus local data. Chinese rules require real-name registration—expect to show your passport at a carrier store, airport counter, or authorized reseller.
This page explains the process pattern, not a pitch for any carrier. Counter scripts and package names change; treat staff instructions and the printed contract as authoritative. Follow local laws.
Why visitors still buy a local SIM
- SMS for Alipay / WeChat when your home number cannot roam reliably (SMS troubleshooting)
- Local rates for ride-hail callbacks and hotel confirmations
- A backup if your travel eSIM data allowance runs out
Many travelers combine a local SMS number with a foreign-carrier travel eSIM for data—or use one line for both if the package allows.
What “real-name” usually involves
- Passport (and sometimes entry stamp / stay paperwork if staff request it)
- In-person or assisted registration tied to that passport
- Activating the SIM in your phone and waiting for the line to provision
- Topping up via the carrier app or cashier (payment may itself need a wallet—bring cash as backup)
We do not invent required form fields here; complete whatever the carrier’s system shows.
Practical tips
- Buy from major carrier counters (China Mobile / Unicom / Telecom) or well-marked official airport desks when possible
- Ask whether the plan includes SMS, not data only
- Keep the SIM packaging and receipt until the line is stable
- Insert the SIM, enable the line, then test a code to yourself before leaving the counter
- If you change phones, ask whether re-registration is required
How this interacts with wallets
Alipay and WeChat can use international numbers, but a local number is often simpler for SMS once you are inland. If you switch the number on an existing wallet, expect fresh security checks (Alipay setup, WeChat setup).
Local network note (neutral)
Traffic on a mainland SIM uses mainland mobile networks under local rules. Plan which apps you need and how you will reach them before you arrive. We do not publish product guides for circumventing network controls.
Dual-SIM habit that saves SMS
If your phone supports two lines:
- Keep the SMS-capable line (home roaming or local mainland SIM) set as default for texts.
- Keep the data line (travel eSIM or local data pack) selected for mobile data.
- When an Alipay or WeChat code does not arrive, look at which line has signal bars—not only whether you have Wi‑Fi.
This pattern pairs well with the foreign-carrier eSIM article.
FAQ
Can I buy a SIM without standing in line?
Some vending machines and online pickup exist in big cities; real-name steps still apply. Ask airport information for the current desk.
Is a tourist SIM the same as a long-term contract line?
Usually you want a prepaid tourist/visitor package with a clear expiry. Confirm auto-renewal is off if you leave soon.
