WeChat is both a messenger and a payments wallet. For travel spending you need WeChat Pay (Weixin Pay) enabled, real-name verification when prompted, and—usually—an international card on file.
Official walkthrough: Guide to add and use international cards with Weixin Pay.
Real-name help: Remove restrictions / complete real-name authentication.
Before you start
- Latest WeChat app from an official store
- Mobile number that can receive SMS (international numbers are accepted per WeChat Help—“No” you do not need a +86 number if SMS works) (Help)
- Passport for identity upload when asked
- Eligible foreign card (networks listed on Help / government pages—confirm in-app)
Step 1 — Install, register, open Wallet
- Install WeChat and register or log in.
- Go to Me → Pay and Services (or Services) → Wallet.
- If Wallet is hidden, follow in-app prompts to enable Weixin Pay (WeChat Help also describes Settings → General → Tools paths and scan-to-enable flows—use the path your build shows).
Step 2 — Real-name authentication
WeChat Pay requires real-name information. For users without a mainland ID, WeChat Help says you provide identity details such as:
- Passport (or other listed travel documents)
- Full name exactly as on the document
- Mobile number, address, occupation
- Photo of the ID and a clear face photo

Step 3 — Add an international card
- In Wallet open Bank Cards → Add a Bank Card.
- Agree to the Weixin Pay terms.
- Enter identity fields if asked again, then card details.
- If you verified with a passport, WeChat Help notes you may be asked to upload a passport copy.
If you see “international card not supported” or similar: card not supported fixes.
Step 4 — What foreign cards can and cannot do
Per WeChat Help, international cards are for everyday purchases in mainland China. They do not support some features such as red packets and money transfers. Always read the payment page for the specific transaction (Help).
Fees and limits
From WeChat Help (verify live article):
- Transaction fees waived for single transactions under ¥200; about 3% for single transactions above ¥200
- Help has stated limits such as ¥6,500 single, ¥50,000 monthly, ¥65,000 yearly for international cards—confirm the current Help text and your payment page
Some government English pages quote different RMB figures. We show the conflict rather than invent a single number—follow the app. See also fee waiver and China Daily’s USD-style summary (link).

FAQ
Do I need a Chinese friend to verify my account?
Tourist international-card flows described in official Help use passport and SMS. Older “friend verification” stories may apply to other account types—follow what your app requests.
Alipay or WeChat first?
Either works for many merchants. Setting up both reduces surprises (Alipay setup).
