Many visitors buy a travel eSIM from a foreign provider before flying to mainland China. This article covers setup timing and a neutral technical description of how some plans route data. It is not a ranking of brands and not a guide to circumventing network controls.

Some foreign-carrier travel eSIMs use international roaming (home routing) so your data path returns to a network outside mainland China. Follow local laws. Install before you travel if the provider requires it.

What “home routing” means in plain language

On some travel plans, when you use the eSIM’s cellular data in mainland China, the session behaves like international roaming: the data path returns to the provider’s network outside mainland China (home routing). Hotel or café Wi‑Fi is a different path and may not behave the same way as that cellular data.

Providers describe their own routing in their help centers. Read the plan’s China page before purchase. Rules and availability change.

Before you buy

  • Confirm your phone is carrier-unlocked and eSIM-capable
  • Read whether the plan includes mainland China (not only Hong Kong / Macao)
  • Check hotspot / fair-use rules if you need them
  • Plan SMS separately—many data eSIMs do not receive bank or wallet SMS (SMS guide)

Install before you fly

  1. Purchase the plan on reliable home internet.
  2. Install the eSIM profile (QR or provider app) before you travel if the provider says new purchases or installs are difficult from inside mainland China.
  3. Label the line (for example “Travel data”) so you can select it later.
  4. Keep your primary SIM/eSIM active for SMS and calls as needed.

When you land (China time)

  1. Enable data roaming for the travel eSIM line (prepaid travel plans normally include roaming in the price—confirm with your provider).
  2. Set that line as the data line; keep the SMS line active.
  3. Test maps and your wallet apps.
  4. If data fails, double-check the line is selected, roaming is on, and the plan’s start trigger (first connection vs fixed date).

Use telecommunications services in line with local laws and your provider’s terms. China Arrive does not sell connectivity and does not publish instructions for unauthorized network access.

FAQ
