Alipay payment failed — seven fixes that usually help
Draft: not yet verified in the live app. Fees, limits, and menus change—confirm on the in-app payment screen and in the provider’s official Help.Verification status: DRAFT — verify in the live app before publish
The merchant scanned your code—or you scanned theirs—and Alipay returned a failure. Work the list in order. After each change, try one small test payment.
China Daily notes that binding foreign cards needs issuer authorization and that some banks reject unrecognized connection information (source).
Fix 1 — Check your bank app first
Open your issuer’s app or SMS. Approve any travel / fraud challenge. Enable overseas and online payments if they were off. Retry after the bank confirms.
Fix 2 — Confirm identity and card name match
If passport verification is incomplete or the name on Alipay differs from the card, binding or paying can fail. Revisit verification failed and setup.
Fix 3 — Use a merchant collection code
Scan codes meant for store collection, not personal “transfer to me” posters. Foreign tourist cards are aimed at everyday purchases; transfer-like flows are a frequent trap.
Fix 4 — Read fees and limits on the confirm screen
A silent mental math error (unexpected 3% above ¥200, or a cap) can look like a “mysterious fail.” See fees and limits.
Fix 5 — Stabilize the network path
Switch between hotel Wi‑Fi and mobile data. If your phone is running a network proxy or similar tunneling tool, turn it off before paying—these tools can break wallet sessions. We do not name or recommend products in that category.
Fix 6 — Try another eligible card or WeChat Pay
Add a backup card, or pay with WeChat Pay. Acceptance differs by wallet and merchant.
Fix 7 — Cash or physical POS, then revisit later
Do not hammer the same declined payment. Pay another way, then debug with Alipay in-app support if offered.
How to capture evidence (helps support)
If you contact wallet support or your bank:
- Screenshot the exact error text (English or Chinese).
- Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
- Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
- Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.
Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.
When to stop retrying
If two careful attempts fail after you fixed SMS, real-name, and bank alerts, switch to another wallet or cash for that purchase. Continued declines can deepen issuer fraud locks.
FAQ
Will retrying ten times help?
Usually it hurts—banks may harden the block. Fix the cause, wait, try once.
Does airplane mode toggle help?
Sometimes resetting radios helps SMS (related), but it will not override an issuer decline.
