Set up Alipay as a foreigner

Alipay is one of the two wallets most visitors need in mainland China. You can often register with an overseas mobile number, complete passport-based identity checks, and link an eligible foreign card for QR payments.
Menus move between app versions. Match buttons by meaning if labels differ slightly.
Before you start
- A smartphone that can install Alipay from your usual app store
- A phone number that receives SMS verification codes (SMS help)
- Your passport (name spelling must match your card later)
- An eligible foreign debit/credit card that allows overseas / online authorizations
- Optional: notify your bank about travel
Government summary of binding foreign cards: China Daily. District English page listing card networks for Alipay / WeChat: Chaoyang.
Step 1 — Install and register
- Download Alipay from your official app store (avoid look-alike apps).
- Open the app and register with your mobile number (international numbers are commonly accepted for tourist use—confirm on screen).
- Enter the SMS code. If no SMS arrives, see Can’t get payment SMS codes.
Step 2 — Identity / passport verification
When Alipay asks for identity:
- Choose the passport (or other supported travel document) path—not a mainland resident ID if you do not have one.
- Enter your name exactly as on the passport, including middle names and punctuation the form allows.
- Upload a clear photo of the bio page (no glare).
- Complete any face check in good light.
If verification fails: Alipay passport verification failed.
Step 3 — Add a foreign bank card
- Open the area to add a bank card (wording varies: Bank Cards / Add card).
- Enter card number, expiry, and security code.
- Approve any 3-D Secure / SMS challenge from your bank.
- If the bind fails, try another eligible card or call your issuer—some banks block unrecognized merchant descriptors (China Daily notes issuer authorization).
Step 4 — Make a payment
Option A: Tap Scan and scan the merchant’s collection QR code.
Option B: Show your payment code for the cashier to scan.
Avoid paying personal “transfer to friend” style codes with a foreign tourist card—those flows are often unsupported for international cards (similar limitations are documented for WeChat international cards on red packets/transfers).
Fees and limits (confirm live)
- Platform cross-border fee: many official summaries say ≤ ¥200 single payments waive the extra service fee; above ¥200 may add about 3%. Confirm on the confirmation screen (fee article).
- Limits: China Daily materials mention foreign-card style caps around US$5,000 single and US$50,000 annual in one summary—verify in your Alipay account limits page (limits article).
Aftercare
- Keep Alipay updated
- Set up WeChat Pay as a backup
- If a charge declines: Alipay payment failed
FAQ
Can I finish setup only after landing?
You can, but SMS and card challenges are easier when your home number and bank app already work. Preparing before travel reduces airport stress.
Does Alipay replace cash completely?
Almost everywhere in large cities—but keep a cash buffer.
Who supports English?
Alipay offers multiple languages in many builds. Switch language in settings if the UI opens in Chinese.
