Can’t receive Alipay or WeChat SMS codes

Draft: not yet verified in the live app. Fees, limits, and menus change—confirm on the in-app payment screen and in the provider’s official Help.Verification status: DRAFT — verify in the live app before publish

Both wallets lean on SMS one-time codes during registration, card binding, or security checks. WeChat Help notes you can use an international number as long as it can receive SMS (Help). Data connectivity alone does not replace SMS.

Why codes vanish for travelers

  1. Data-only travel eSIM — Many travel eSIMs do not provide a voice/SMS number. Keep your home SIM/eSIM registered for SMS, or obtain a local number that can receive texts (local SIM basics, eSIM facts).
  2. Roaming SMS disabled — Enable SMS/voice roaming for the line that owns the wallet account (confirm costs with your home carrier).
  3. Filtering / spam folders — Check blocked messages on iOS/Android.
  4. Wrong country code typed in the app.
  5. Airplane mode / Dual-SIM mix-ups — The non-SMS line may be selected for calls.
  6. Issuer SMS for 3-D Secure may go to a different number than your WeChat/Alipay login number—watch both.

What to try

  1. Confirm which SIM is “default for SMS.”
  2. Toggle airplane mode, wait 30 seconds, reconnect.
  3. Ask the wallet to resend once; wait the full timer.
  4. Stand near a window or step outside if signal is weak.
  5. If you already use a foreign-carrier data eSIM for internet, still leave the SMS-capable line powered on.
  6. As a last resort, complete steps on Wi‑Fi while the SMS SIM has signal—not the other way around.

How to capture evidence (helps support)

If you contact wallet support or your bank:

  1. Screenshot the exact error text (English or Chinese).
  2. Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
  3. Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
  4. Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.

Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.

When to stop retrying

If two careful attempts fail after you fixed SMS, real-name, and bank alerts, switch to another wallet or cash for that purchase. Continued declines can deepen issuer fraud locks.

FAQ

Can email replace SMS?
Only if the app explicitly offers another channel. Most card binds still want SMS.

Will a new local SIM force me to re-register Alipay?
Not always—but changing login numbers can trigger fresh checks. Plan before you swap.
