Alipay asked for passport details or a face scan and returned a failure. Most tourist issues are data-entry or photo quality—not a permanent ban.

Common causes

  • Name order or middle name differs from the passport line
  • Blurry, cropped, or reflective passport photo
  • Face scan in dark light, with hat/sunglasses, or multiple faces in frame
  • Unstable network mid-upload
  • Trying again too quickly after a reject (wait before the next attempt)

Steps

  1. Copy the passport name character by character, including spaces the form allows.
  2. Retake the bio page in daylight without flash glare; fill the frame.
  3. For face checks: plain background, hold still, remove sunglasses.
  4. Use stable connectivity; avoid switching networks mid-submit.
  5. Wait several hours (or overnight) after repeated fails, then retry once.
  6. If Alipay support chat is offered in your build, send the error text without sharing full card numbers in public forums.

After it passes

Return to card linking. If payments still decline, open payment failed.

How to capture evidence (helps support)

If you contact wallet support or your bank:

  1. Screenshot the exact error text (English or Chinese).
  2. Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
  3. Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
  4. Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.

Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.

When to stop retrying

If two careful attempts fail after you fixed SMS, real-name, and bank alerts, switch to another wallet or cash for that purchase. Continued declines can deepen issuer fraud locks.
