What WeChat Help asks for
For users without a mainland ID card, Help lists information such as:
- Identity document (passport or other listed permits)
- Full name exactly as on the document (capitalization and punctuation matter)
- Mobile phone number
- Address
- Occupation
- Photo of the ID
- Clear photo of your face
After valid information is provided, Help states the account can be unfrozen for payments (source).
Tips that clear most tourist failures
- Choose passport when you do not hold a mainland resident ID
- Match middle names and hyphens to the passport MRZ/visual zone carefully
- Shoot the bio page flat, bright, no fingers over numbers
- Face scan: remove hats and heavy glare glasses; good front lighting
- If the app offers a fallback “hold passport next to face” photo after repeated face fails, follow its template exactly and wait for review
Passport uploads also appear in the international-card setup tips (card Help).
After approval
Add your card again if needed (setup). If Pay still fails for other reasons, use the not working checklist.
How to capture evidence (helps support)
If you contact wallet support or your bank:
- Screenshot the exact error text (English or Chinese).
- Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
- Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
- Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.
Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.
When to stop retrying
If two careful attempts fail after you fixed SMS, real-name, and bank alerts, switch to another wallet or cash for that purchase. Continued declines can deepen issuer fraud locks.
