WeChat Pay not working — checklist for foreigners
Draft: not yet verified in the live app. Fees, limits, and menus change—confirm on the in-app payment screen and in the provider’s official Help.Verification status: DRAFT — verify in the live app before publish
Use this list when Wallet will not open, payments hang, or every scan fails. Confirm each item before assuming the merchant’s code is broken.
Checklist
1. Is Pay / Wallet enabled?
Open Me → Pay and Services → Wallet. If missing, enable Weixin Pay using in-app prompts (setup guide, Help).
2. Is real-name complete?
A restriction notice usually means unfinished KYC. Complete passport + face steps (Help, real-name article).
3. Can you receive SMS?
Binding and some challenges need codes. Fix delivery first (SMS guide).
4. Is a usable card linked?
If add-card fails, see card not supported.
5. Are you inside a supported transaction type?
Foreign cards: everyday purchases—not red packets or peer transfers (Help).
6. Limits or fees surprising you?
Large tickets may hit caps or show a 3% line above ¥200. Read the confirmation screen (fees).
7. Connection glitches
Switch between stable Wi‑Fi and mobile data. If you use any network proxy or similar tool on the phone, turn it off for the payment attempt—some tools interfere with wallet apps. We do not recommend any product in that category.
8. App freshness
Update WeChat; reboot the phone; try again once.
Still stuck?
Try the same merchant with Alipay, or pay cash. Contact WeChat Pay support from inside the app if available in your region.
How to capture evidence (helps support)
If you contact wallet support or your bank:
- Screenshot the exact error text (English or Chinese).
- Note the time in China Standard Time (UTC+8) once you are in mainland China.
- Mask card numbers before you send images anywhere public.
- Keep the merchant name and approximate amount.
Do not post live QR codes or full passport pages on social media.
When to stop retrying
If two careful attempts fail after you fixed SMS, real-name, and bank alerts, switch to another wallet or cash for that purchase. Continued declines can deepen issuer fraud locks.
FAQ
Wallet opens but every QR fails.
Confirm you are scanning a merchant collection code, not a personal receive code meant for transfers.
